Words from excerpts from "Prairie" by Carl Sandburg
Level: Advanced
Duration: ~4:00
When I became acquainted with Carl Sandburg's "Prairie," the message of letting the past be the past on focusing on the the new day and the sky of tomorrows ahead really resonated with me. I grabbed several snippets from the fairly lengthy poem that seemed best suited to express the message for a 4-5 minute choral piece and the I set out to find the right musical setting to express how I feel about the message. The result is A Sky of Tomorrows.
Suitable for University and advanced Community and High School choirs.
Learn more about the background of writing this piece:
I tell you the past is a bucket of ashes.
Yesterday is a wind gone down.
I tell you the past is a bucket of ashes;
a sun dropped in the west.
In the morning hours, in the dawn,
The sun puts out the stars of the sky.
And at sundown
I will hanker after nothing so much as one more sunrise,
One more sunrise!
Cry hallelujah to the streaks of daylight;
Shout and sing to the morning sun.
I tell you there is nothing in the world
only an ocean of tomorrows;
a sky of tomorrows.
